In the dialog area Connected servers special information for each server is displayed in the columns Type and Role .

The following gives a detailed explanation:

The Type is defined in the license file:

PASSIVE means:
A service without special functionality (neither master, nor backup). The server does not know what it will become, because no license has yet been installed. This is the default behaviour after installation.
MASTER (as type) means:
Determined MASTER, as defined in the license file.
BACKUP (as type) means:
Determined BACKUP server, as defined in the license file.

The Role MASTER/BACKUP tells you which sever currently is the authoritative server.

(There is always one server with the role of MASTER.)

2 node cluster:

If the master fails, the backup server takes over, however, it can only run for a restricted time frame.

As soon as the master is back, it immediately receives the role "backup" again.

3 node cluster:

A master server (defined in the license file)
The server running for the longest time will become the master, as long as 2 other nodes in the cluster are online (The cluster as Quorum).

The server running for the longest time will become the master, as long as 2 other nodes in the cluster are online (The cluster has Quorum).

There is no restriction of backup time (because there is no server with the specification "always master" in a 3 node cluster).

This is reflected in the difference between type and role.
